The recipient of MPS’ October charitable contribution goes to Breaking Ground, a grass-roots nonprofit that provides resources to motivated Cameroonian communities. They target communities that have already prioritized a need, collectively decided upon a solution, and have begun actively working towards their goal, but whose progress is held up by a lack of funding.
Breaking Ground was presented to MPS by our former Community Engagement Manager, Kat McDonald. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon during the early 2000’s, she designed, implemented, and evaluated multiple rounds of a sustainable six-week business course program, as well as managed many marketing and micro-finance projects. She has maintained contact with her friends and colleagues in the village where she worked.
Unfortunately, Cameroon, a vibrant and diverse country, is now polarized by a longstanding political and cultural debate that has escalated into violence. On the brink of a civil war, over 200,000 civilians are displaced internally and the UN estimates at least 32,000 children have been out of school since Nov 2017. In response to this situation, Breaking Ground is currently focusing on supplying families who have fled their homes with food, water, medicine, soap, clothing, and other essentials. They are also partnering with local organizations to build schools.
